CRA Conference Experiences for Women Award

The department is pleased to announce that Janet Burge, a Computer Science graduate student, has been awarded a grant for travel and conference expenses from the "Conference Experiences for Women" project of the CRA Committee on the Status of Women in CS and CE.

Janet was nominated by Profs. Carolina Ruiz, who will serve as her "mentor" at the conference, and David Brown, her M.S. Thesis Advisor.

"The CRA Committee on the Status of Women in CS and CE was formed to eliminate the barriers to full participation by women in CS and CE research. Our goal is to maintain and increase the number, status, and success of women participating in CS and CE research at the Ph.D. level. We do this through a series of projects run by members of the CS and CE research community.

We have a new project called Conference Experiences for Women. This project is being funded by the Education, Outreach, and Training group of the Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastruction (EOT-PACI) of the NSF. We believe that the experience of attending a research conference is very motivating for female undergrads and new graduate students and interaction with faculty (particularly female faculty who can act as role models) is also important in the decision of women to pursue a research career."
