Tenure Track Faculty Positions AY 1999-2000

The Computer Science Department of WPI invites applications for one, and possibly two, tenure track positions beginning August, 2000. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field, and strength in both research and teaching. Preference will be given to candidates at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Software Engineering/Programming Languages. We are also interested in excellent candidates at ALL ranks who complement and enhance our existing research in Artificial Intelligence, Databases, Systems/Networks, Theory, Image Science and Information Systems.

The department grants the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, and has a Computer and Communications Networks graduate program, jointly with the Electrical and Computer Engineering department.

The department offers a collegial, supportive environment, with mechanisms established to encourage interdisciplinary activities.

The department is in a strong growth phase, with 19 tenure track faculty, and plans to hire several more over the next few years. The department has a large variety of computing resources, and is committed to providing the most advanced software and hardware environment for both research and teaching.

WPI, the nation's third oldest college of engineering and science, has approximately 2,700 undergraduates and over 1,000 full- and part-time graduate students, with over 200 tenure track faculty. WPI's innovative, project-based undergraduate program, the WPI plan, offers students an unusual, exciting and academically challenging alternative to traditional curricula. WPI has initiated a process to enhance the role of graduate studies and research.

The WPI campus is situated in the heart of Worcester, close to many of the city's major cultural attractions, including the American Antiquarian Society, the Worcester Art Museum and several major music performance venues. Worcester, the second-largest city in New England, is forty miles west of Boston. The city offers access to the diverse cultural and recreational resources of a major city, with the possibility of a relaxed lifestyle.

Worcester is also the seat of nine other colleges and universities, including the Medical School of the University of Massachusetts. WPI is close to numerous hi-tech companies (along the I-495 corridor); it is three miles from a thriving bio-technology industrial park and offers ample opportunities for industrial interaction.
