Marshall Scholarship

Text from Prof. Peter H. Hansen, WPI; 23rd November 2002:

Congratulations to Nicholas Twomey Baker, '03, who has been awarded a Marshall Scholarship for graduate study in the United Kingdom. Nick is from Milford, New Hampshire, and completing a double major in Computer Science and Philosophy at WPI. Nick plans to study computer games technology and digital games as a Marshall Scholar at Liverpool John Moores University.

Marshall Scholarships enable young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. The scholarships give students who are potential leaders, opinion-formers and decision-makers in the US an understanding and appreciation of Britain. The Marshall Scholarships were established in 1953 as a gesture of thanks from the British Government for the US assistance in rebuilding Europe after World War II.

Each year, 40 scholars are selected in the US to spend two years in graduate school at a British University, with all expenses paid by the British government. Former Marshall Scholars include Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and New York Times Foreign Affairs columnist Thomas Friedman.

Official announcement of the award will be made in a few days on the Marshall Scholarship website: http://www.marshallscholarship.org/.

Nick was one of two regional finalists for the Marshall Scholarship this year from WPI. Nick and Jennifer Scheipers, '03, advanced further in the Marshall competition than previous WPI students, and I am very proud of them both.

Congratulations to Nick, and thanks to Gregory Theyel, Roger Gottlieb, Dave Brown, and Mike Ciaraldi, who strongly supported his application. As far as I am aware, Nick is WPI's first Marshall Scholar.
