New Department Head
The WPI Computer Science Department is very pleased to announce that after an extensive search Prof. Michael A. Gennert has agreed to become our new department head, starting in the 2003-2004 academic year.
Michael Gennert, whose Sc.D. degree is from Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been at the WPI Computer Science Department since August 1987. Professor Gennert conducts research in computational vision, including stereo, motion, and fractal image modeling; image and multimedia databases, including temporal data modeling; and category theory and abstraction theory.
The department's current head, Prof. Micha Hofri, steps down after 5 years to become a faculty member in the department.
Announcement from WPI's Provost, John F. Carney:
I am very pleased to announce that Professor Michael A. Gennert has accepted my offer to become the next Head of the Department of Computer Science, effective July 1, 2003. I want to thank the Computer Science Department Faculty and the Search Committee, chaired by Bill Durgin, for their hard work, patience, and spirit of cooperation during the long international search process. I also wish to thank Professor Micha Hofri for his five years of service as Head of the Department. During this period, CS continued to significantly increase its undergraduate and graduate student population, and Micha did an admirable job of dealing with this expansion. Micha attracted six tenure-track Faculty members, two Professors of the Practice of Computer Science, and several other talented, full-time non-tenure track faculty during his headship, thereby greatly strengthening the Department. I wish him great success and satisfaction as he devotes himself to full-time teaching and research activities at WPI. Please join me in congratulating Mike on his new appointment. I look forward with pleasure to working with him to further strengthen the Department of Computer Science.
