Professor of Practice
The CS department is pleased to announce that Gary Pollice has joined us as a Professor of Practice.
Gary Pollice joins us from Rational Software, an IBM company, where his online biography says:
A curmudgeon is a 'crusty, ill-tempered, usually old man.' The RUP Curmudgeon, aka Gary Pollice, tries not to be too ill tempered (some people say he's really a nice guy), but he does admit to often being crusty, and unfortunately there's nothing he can do about being old. Gary has been developing software for a very long time and is passionate about producing high- quality products that satisfy customers. He spends a lot of time meeting customers to find out what their needs are and how Rational can best meet those needs. Gary has been involved in application software development as well as software tools, particularly compiler development. Gary has a B.A. in mathematics from Rutgers and an M.S. in computer science from U. Massachusetts, Lowell. He also has a life outside of work, but no one can figure out what it is.
His research interests include empirical software engineering, programming methods, software quality, practical software processes, and programming languages and tools. He says that while these do not always come together neatly, they often interact; sometimes in surprising ways. So far he has taught CS525T Software Testing, CS562 Experiments in Software Engineering, and is teaching CS503 Foundations of Computer Science this summer. He will be working with George Heineman and Mike Ciaraldi to help put together a stronger software engineering program for the department.
The Professor of Practice rank enables experienced professionals to share their particular industrial/business expertise and experience on a full-time basis with the WPI community. Gary joins Mike Ciaraldi as the department's second Professor of Practice.
