Formal Software Inspections were first introduced in 1976 by Michael Fagan of IBM as a cost effective technique to reduce defects in software products and improve the quality of the software development process. As originally defined, the people performing Formal Software Inspections were required to have detailed knowledge of the product being inspected. This talk will present data which suggests that it may be possible to relax the detailed product knowledge requirement and still have an effective formal software inspection.
