The arrival of the world wide web and CAD/CASE tools have increased the demand for advanced database techniques that are not available in traditional systems. Modern database systems are expected to support spatial data and many interrelated views and representations upon the data. With colleagues at the University of Connecticut, Western Connecticut State University and St. John's College, we have previously devised techniques to support the design of databases needed in the support of architectural design systems. These include constructs for the specification of and generation of code to support relationships among persistent objects in the system, as well as mathematical techniques to capture constraints and generate the active rules that maintain consistency. In this talk, I will review the research we have carried out, and explain how this is related to object design and support for collaborative design in a distributed environment.
