DNA, the "master molecule," is a chemically simple but incredibly powerful form of biological information storage and retrieval device. The information encrypted in DNA is used by all living cells to define the structure of proteins and other cell components. Although biotechnology is the oldest form of human technology still in use, the relatively recent ability to manipulate DNA in a planned and predictable way has revolutionized the field. We have today pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and commodities that are only possible through the use of DNA technology.
