The amount of information available to individuals is growing explosively. There is great demand for methods to filter items of information with respect to users' individual preferences. This demand has only recently begun to be addressed with automated information filtering systems. These systems rely on data about both users and items in order to predict the degree to which a particular user would be interested in a particular item. Such predictions may then be used to present, or recommend, items of potential interest to users. In this talk we will begin by outlining the content-based and collaborative approaches to filtering and recommendation systems. We will then briefly describe our current research activities in this field, as well as plans and opportunities for future research.
