Abstract

Much of Computer Science is concerned with designing things -- programs, architecture, algorithms, even proofs can be seen in that light. The foundation of engineering disciplines such as electrical or mechanical engineering is design. Many design activities in the "real world" are performed in a `social setting', often as a group activity. A recent and growing area of research is the study of how people actually perform design. This provides data about what sort of tools, and interfaces to them, people actually need. For software, designing using components is being studied. A portion of this presentation about designing with components will concentrate on a Strawman exercise.
