Abstract
The Constraint Database (CDB) model constitutes a natural extension of the Relational Database model, where constaints provide a finte representation for datasets with with infinite semantics, such as spatio- temporal data. After a brief introduction to constraint query languages, we will focus on two issues: Constraint Query Algebras, and aggregate operators for CDBs. We will then present our work on constraint queries for for similarity searching of time- series data, showing how the expressive power of constraint-based specification can be coupled with efficient indexing methods. Finally, we will consider the distinction between the fields of databases and information systems, formalizing it in a novel way.
