Performance Analysis of QUIC versus TCP on Satellite Networks

Abstract

QUIC is a new network transport protocol used by a growing number of online services to deliver data, with the goal of improving performance over TCP for web browsing. Some of QUIC's improvements may be greater on Satellite connections, which have a higher round-trip time than typical, wired connections. However, previous research demonstrated that TCP versus QUIC has little to no effect on performance compared to their congestion control algorithms over conventional networks. Many of these studies only tested synthetic loads or used previous standards of QUIC. We conduct a study of the performance of QUIC compared to TCP using an emulated satellite connection to run tests on the latest RFC9000 standard of QUIC. Analysis of our results shows that QUIC performs slightly better than TCP for small, single objects, but does not provide benefits for web browsing over a satellite.
