COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course will cover the theory and practice of computer system and network performance evaluation We will study measurement techniques, simulation models, queueing models, and their application to computer systems and network performance studies. You are expected to have some previous study of probability and statistics. We will review these topics, but the reviews won't be adequate if you haven't studied them before.

TEXT: The text for this course is The Art of Computer Systems Performance Analysis, by R. Jain. Copies are available from the WPI Bookstore.

OFFICE HOURS: My office hours are Mon 2:00, Thu 11:00, and by appointment.

PROJECT: There will be a semester project of your own design. It may involve research, a simulation study, a queueing study, or the implementation of some performance tool. You must submit a one-page proposal describing your project by October 10. I will discuss project possibilities in class, and I will be happy to discuss your project ideas with you before the proposal due date. The final project will be due on December 5.

GRADES: In addition to the project, there will be a midterm exam (October 24) and a final exam (December 12). Your grade will be calculated as follows:
