Final Project Proposal:   Face or Birds (feathers)

For the first part of my final project I plan to learn 3D studio MAX, in depth.  I plan to read through all of the tutorials available to me. To do this I had to get a copy of the CD containing all of the necessary information for the tutorial.  By the end of my use learning of 3D studio max I will implement a 3D picture.  This will combined my art background and the use of different tools within 3D studio max.

There are two current options for my final project. The first pertains to the siggraph paper “Sythesizing Realistic Facial Expressions from Photographs”.  I have contacted the authors of the siggraph paper to try and obtain the software produced with that paper.  I plan to use this software to reproduce the testing portion of their paper.  This will produce a realistic rendering of my face.  I will take multiple renderings of my face and use those to create renderings that were not taken for 2D images.  I found it necessary to obtain the software because I would not be able to produce it within the specified time.

The second option would be to try and recreate the rendering of realistic looking feathers from the presentation that I will be giving in week 12.  I would either try and obtain the software produce with the paper “Modeling and Rendering of Realistic Feathers” and create (using my art background) a scene containing a bird using this software.  Or I would try to implement the modeling of a simple feather using the method described in “Modeling and Rendering of Individual Feathers”.  The only portion that might be excluded if I do chose to try and implement the single feather would probably be the texture mapping.

I understand that this proposal is really two but my final project will depend upon the cooperation of the creators of the software I have researched this term.
