I was considering implementing a stains plug in to
simulate surface changes from rain interacting with surface particles. It would
use many of the techniques from Dorsey, Pedersen and Hanrahan's "Flow and
Changes in Appearance", including the particle system and a texture map of
the altered surface.
The techniques used in the paper "Flow and
Changes in Appearance" will be implemented, complete with a particle
system and dirt layer textures. The
water is represented as a particle system, with each particle being one water
droplet. I hope to also include interaction with the particles from such
influences as friction, wind, roughness or the surface, and dirt size.
I expect to develop a plug in for 3DS Max that will
allow the user to specify the amount of dust an object starts with, and the
duration, intensity and direction of rain that falls on the object. The system will work for complex
shapes.
