Abstract: Global change research is a form of scientific discovery. This paper identifies database requirements for global change research by examining the process of scientific discovery. We find that current database technology is inadequate for the task and a number of deficiencies are pointed out. Specific requirements are laid out in the areas of Data Management, Methodology Management, Flexible Environments, and User Interfaces.
